who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the
way which I went. And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods
which were in their hand, and all their ear-rings which were in their
ears, and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.” And
the family of Jacob never found them again. “And they journeyed, and
the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and
they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.”
Jacob was humbled, and required his family to humble themselves,
and to lay off all their ornaments, for he was to make an atonement for
their sins, by offering a sacrifice unto God, that he might be entreated
for them, and not leave them to be destroyed by other nations. God
accepted the efforts of Jacob to remove the wrong from his family, and
appeared unto him, and blessed him, and renewed the promise made
to him, because his fear was before him. “And Jacob set up a pillar in
the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone.”
