his prosperity to cease, and would raise up adversaries against him,
and he should no longer reign as universal monarch upon the throne
of Israel. Had Solomon died prior to his departing from God, his life
would have been one of the most remarkable upon record. But he
tarnished his lustre, and exhibited a striking example of the weakness
of the wisest of mortals. The greatest men, and the wisest, will surely
fail, unless their lives are marked with trust in God, and obedience to
his commandments.
